What You Must Know Before You Buy Your First Budgie

There are a few factors to consider before you buy your budgie.

ASK YOURSELF THESE BASIC QUESTIONS

Are you financially stable?
Do you have the time to play with your budgie?
Do you know that budgies can live for more than 10 years?
Do you have other pets and are they compatible?
Are you or your family members allergic to animals?
Will you be keeping more than one budgie?
Have you done your research?
RESEARCH – The Internet even a bookstore is full of information on Budgies- Parakeets. It is in your best interest that you research as much as possible about these birds.

A great book that I recommend is “The Complete Guide to Budgie Care and Ownership.” Find it by clicking here!

PLEASE DO NOT BUY BIRD ON IMPULSE!!!! I made this mistake when I first got budgies. My parents bought me a pair and we didn’t know anything about it. The sales associate of the pet store was just getting my dad to buy useless things. He ended up selling us the wrong feed and the wrong type of cage. I only realized this when I went to my local library to research on the care of budgies.

BUY ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES – Before you think about buying your budgies it is a great idea to prepare yourself by purchasing the essential supplies you will need for your budgie. The list is as follows;

Bird Cage – try not to buy rounded cages as they limit their space. A good cage is a flight care the more room your budgies have the better
Good Feed – whether is a seed diet or a pelleted diet make sure they have all the essential nutrients.
Sturdy Perches – Budgies need perches that are rounded and not too large. I have seen a lot of awful products like the sand perches. I think those hurt the birds.
Calcium and Iodine Blocks – Calcium can help keep the bones of your budgies in top shape and if you are planning on breeding your budgies calcium is a must for proper egg production. A lot of budgies and caged birds suffer from iodine deficiency so it is good to get them an iodine supplement.
BUY FROM BREEDER – I have had better experienced personally buying from local breeders than pet stores. I am not saying that all pet stores are bad some pet stores do take good care of the pets they sell.

If you do buy from a pet store make sure that the cages that the budgies/parakeets are housed in are clean. Some pet stores in California pack their breeding cages which are not that large with birds, This is a cruel practice. Make sure that all birds seem happy and are active. I know this may seem very unlikely but there had been a couple of pet stores that have been up to par.

FIRST VET VISIT – Always take your newly purchased budgie to the Vet. It is best that you find an Avian Vet. They are a little harder to find. If you absolutely cannot find and Avian Vet in your area, just make sure that the vet you will be visiting has extensive knowledge and experience with budgies or birds in general. Budgies tend to mask sickness very well. I have seen budgies look very cheerful and active but all of a sudden they die. It is always good to find out if they are healthy or not. If you cannot afford a vet visit you may have to reconsider if caring for a budgie is a good idea.
